UAE approves GCC Trademarks Law

The President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan has issued Federal Decree No. 52 approving the unified GCC States Trademarks Law which covers the registration and protection of trademarks.

The decree has been issued following the recommendations of the GCC States’ leaders in regards to the combined economic process, aimed at the unification of economic and trading policies and systems in GCC States.

The reports quote Mr. Mohammed Ahmed bin Abdulaziz, Secretary of UAE Ministry of Economy - Planning Sector, as follows:

The technical committee of the GCC Council drafted the law embracing GCC States’ commitments to international treaties.

During the 27th session of the Supreme Council of the GCC States held in Riyadh in 2006, the law was approved as an obligatory legislation for adoption by all GCC States six months after the executive charter of this law is issued.

The law comprises of six sections and defines the process of protection and registration of trademarks.

The unified GCC States’ Trademarks Law defines words and phrases relating to trademarks, the meaning of a trademark, the conditions and procedures to register a trademark, the authorization to use a trademark, trademarks of the bodies and entities, the penalties for violation of a trademark and the role of the GCC States’ Commercial Cooperation Committee in issuing the executive charter of the law and its right of further explanations and modifications.
